Get ready for the Overwatch World Cup 2018!
The qualifiers for the Overwatch World Cup 2018 started on Tuesday with the best rated players invited to compete in the final main event in November. “From today through to the end of the competitive season 9 we will be tracking the average score rating of each country’s top 150 players,” Blizzard commented. “The top 24 countries at the end of this period will be invited to compete in the 2018 Overwatch World Cup along side the host countries United States, France, South Korea and Thailand whom are already guaranteed a spot. In total 24 teams will be competing in the Overwatch World Cup 2018”.
A committee will be formed to select the team rosters composing of the top invited players. Invited players have the opportunity to compete in selection between the 15th of June and the 5th of July. From this pool, the teams of each country will be formed. Group stages will then be held from August through to October. The top 8 teams will then move forward into the final stage in November, Southern California, of which the winner will be crowned Overwatch World Cup champions for 2018.
We expect to see many of the familiar faces in the Overwatch League to also represent their country. South Korea, with the abundance of top quality players, will have the dilemma of deciding who should be left out. Who will it be? A mix between NYXL, London Spitfire and Seoul? Will Fissure, Carpe be included? Or will the strategy be to choose solely from one of big three teams to ensure chemistry? The quality and skill set of non Korean players is quickly catching up, as seen from the competitiveness that Fusion put up in Stage 2 of the inaugural season of the Overwatch League. The Overwatch World Cup 2018, will without doubt, have some major upsets similar to what we have seen in the Overwatch League. Bring it on!
